Join us on October 10 at 9:00 AM for a 3-mile moderate-to-strenuous hike beginning at the State Line Lookout Café in Palisades Interstate Park. FOCA volunteer Rob Raven will lead the hike, which begins at the highest point of the New Jersey Palisades and offers spectacular views along the way.
The State Line Lookout is located about half a mile south of the New York–New Jersey state line. The area has a fascinating conservation history. In the late 1800s, quarrying operations threatened to destroy large sections of the Palisades to supply building materials for New York City. This led to one of the earliest major conservation campaigns in American history.
In 1900, the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs successfully lobbied for legislation protecting 12 miles of the Palisades. The Palisades Interstate Park Commission was established in 1903 to preserve the area, with strong support from the Rockefeller family, who purchased land on both sides of the Hudson River to help ensure its protection.
